Cletus P. Ernster, III is a native of Cuero, Texas. He is a 1986 graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Trinity University in 1990, later attending the University of Houston Graduate School focusing on Constitutional and Civil Rights history. Ernster received his law degree from Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 1995.
Mr. Ernster received the 2005 NAACP Alex Award For Legal Excellence in recognition of his commitment to work against racial injustices in the African American community. He also received the NAACP’s 2005 Special President’s Award at the organization’s statewide convention for his efforts in addressing consumer racial profiling and injustices.
In 2001, Mr. Ernster was recognized by Texas Lawyer Magazine as one of the 40 up and coming lawyers under 40 years of age. Law Dragon Magazine identified Cletus Ernster as one of 500 attorneys worldwide who are carrying the profession to new frontiers by awarding him the distinction as a 2006 Law Dragon 500 New Star. In addition, Mr. Ernster received recognition in 2006 from H Texas Magazine as one of Houston's Top Lawyers, as well as a congressional certificate of recognition for equality focused work.
Mr. Ernster was a 2004 Guest Speaker at the University of Texas at Austin Symposium on Consumer Racial Profiling.
Cletus Ernster is licensed by the Texas Supreme Court, and admitted to practice in the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Southern, and Western Districts of Texas, as well as the Third and Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeal. He is a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, State Bar of Texas, National Employment Lawyers Association and Thurgood Marshall School of Law Alumni Association. He has been described as a hard working, tireless advocate of consumer rights.
